Thursday 23rd September

25 Sep 2004, Paddy

Arrived in Cusco at around 05h00 ish with no idea were to stay. This topped with the fact that we had just endured 24hrs of extreme hell in almost sub zero conditions – well that’s what it felt like. It was with luck then that Hanneke, the Dutch girl we befriended on the bus trip, came back into the bus depot to see if we would like to share her taxi. Not only did we share a taxi ride, Seamus and I also blagged our way into her hostel. Sorted. Beds looked a little iffy though so we opt for sleeping bags. Sleep.

Woke up at 09h30 and headed out for breakfast. I have to admit I’m getting a bit fed up with meat and potatoes so we went to one of the more modern eateries in Cusco and had Eggs and Toast. Seamus brought the Marmite.

Didn’t do muh all day really. Had a little look around and then spent more time on the internet updating the site.

Hanneke got an email from some people she had met earlier on in her visit saying drinks at 22h00 in the Irish bar just off the main square. Top stuff. A great night with some great people. Lots of bottles of bear and some very expensive JDs too.

100 Sols for 4 JDs is expensive. About 18 pounds I think. Not my all time record for expensive JDs thought. That would have to be in India in ’96 – 25 pounds for 1 JD witgh real coke. This was 1996 too.

We got to bed at some point. Tomorrow we have plans to trek out to see some Incan ruins.

Spent my birthday in Paddy Flaherty's - can just about remember it. Good bar, decent Guinness too considering it's come god knows how many thousand miles... Rosie's wasn't bad either. Will be very impressed if it's still going though.

How is it possible that you can eat so many burgers in Puru!? Did you see Elvis whilst you were there too? ;-)

I thought puca was an Irish shapeshifter. However, the image above is a signal lesson to the modern builders of today. It illustrates dedication not seen in modern times.
